Sixty-third president of APS.

The National Association for Biomedical Research (NABR) held its 10th Anniversary Conference January 28-30, 1990. The conference was designed to provide an open forum to share the experiences and concerns of both NABR members andfederal agencies. Its goal was to solidify and coordinate action plans and policies within the community-research institutions, professional societies, and federal agenciesto respond effectively to the various crisis situations that confront the scientific community. As an active player in efforts to ensure that researchers continue to be able to use animals humanely, APS was asked to participate in the meeting. Spectfically, we were asked “to discuss APS’ role in responding to the animal rights movement and (our) program and policies for assisting its members.” The following are my comments from the meeting.
